Record day helps Hawks clinch second straight Challenge Cup

For the second straight season, the Bishop Hendricken golf team has claimed the Challenge Cup.

The Hawks cruised past a field of 21 teams last week at Alpine Country Club in Cranston, posting a team score of 606 over the two-day event, 56 shots better than second-place La Salle (662).

On day one, Hendricken made history. Its team score of even par (288) was the best in the event’s 34-year run. Additionally, the tournament director believed that Hendricken’s mark broke the previous record by eight or nine shots.

And that record day allowed the Hawks to take a significant lead, essentially clinching the tournament with a 44-stroke advantage after one day of golf.

Junior Joey Tucker paced the field on day one, shooting a minus-three 69. Colin Sutyla (70), Sean Irons (72) and Claudio Soukamneuth (77) also scored for the Hawks.

After the historic first day, Hendricken wanted to prove that it was no fluke.

“The second day was all about validating day one,” Hendricken head coach Rick Angeli said.

Hendricken didn’t gain as much ground as it did on day one, but the Hawks were still able to tack on to their lead, picking up another 12 strokes on the rival Rams.

Tucker, who is committed to Central Connecticut State University, battled for the individual title on day two, but lost in a playoff after tying for first place with three other golfers.

Zach White also scored for the Hawks on day two with a 79, as five of the Hawks’ six golfers shot at least one round under 80 for the tournament.

Following the Challenge Cup, Hendricken traveled to South Carolina, where it got four more rounds of gold under its belt.

It was set to get its RIIL slate underway on Wednesday against Toll Gate at Quidnessett Country Club, but results were unavailable at press time.

After finishing in third as a team last spring, the Hawks are determined to take the next step with a strong returning core this season.

But Hendricken knows that the key is consistency and improvement from start to finish.

“It’s a good start to the season, but we started well last year and crashed and burned in the states,” Angeli said. “We’re focused on playing well all the way through.”
