Stephanie Bush, a Warwick resident, received the 11th Dorothy Shackleton Anti-Hunger Leadership Award this year from the URI Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America.

The award is given to a student well versed in the issues of hunger and poverty and has used their knowledge to increase education and outreach within the community.

Shackleton was a former employee of the Rhode Island Department of Human Services. The Feinstein Center for a Hunger Free America is contracted by the Department of Human Services with support from the U.S. Department of Agriculture to coordinate the state’s SNAP Outreach Project.

Award winner Bush graduated from the University of Rhode Island this year with two degreed in Nutrition & Dietetics as well as Psychology. While and undergraduate, Bush worked as a SNAP Outreach Project Coordinator for the Hunger Center, joining the team in the spring of 2014.

“The position has opened my eyes to the real issues that people face and to the complexity of hunger and poverty issues.  This job helped me realize that you never really know a person’s whole story,” Bush said in a statement.

Bush was honored that her hard work was recognized. She said through her position she has learned how agencies work together to have a positive impact on low income Rhode Islanders. Hearing the stories of various clients who receive SNAP has been a “positive” influence for her.

Dr. Kathleen Gorman, director of the Feinstein Center said, “Stephanie is one of those students I would love to clone; she is intelligent, fun-loving, hard-working, committed and witty all at the same time. She wants to be the best she can be while making it look easy.”

Bush will move on to Keene State College in New Hampshire this September to begin a Dietetic Internship Program, where she will hone her skills through supervised experiences in various settings such as hospitals, food service venues as well as within the community. She hopes to come back to Rhode Island after to work as a nutritionist with low-income residents.
