Ribbon of Hope license plates delivered

Posted

There will be new pink license plates seen on Rhode Island’s roadways, as 750 Ribbon of Hope plates were distributed and installed on cars whose owners participated in the first round of orders. Volunteers worked at Warwick Mall parking lot on Saturday, Sept. 6 to hand out and install most of the 920 plates that were made and delivered. Rhode Island lawmakers approved the new plate in October 2012. State law required the sale of at least 900 sets of license plates before production began. Proceeds from the foundation’s license plate will expand free breast cancer screenings offered through the state Department of Health’s Women’s Cancer Screening Program. Those who ordered plates but could not attend the distribution on Sept. 6 can get their plates at the Department of Motor Vehicles in Cranston. Pictured is Carol Donnelly, office manager at the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation, handing Maria Gemma, executive director of the foundation, her license plates. What makes it more special to Gemma is the fact that the name of her mother, the late Gloria Gemma, appears on the plate. (Text by Meri R. Kennedy/Photos by Steve Popiel)
