I have been traveling through the Historic Apponaug section of Warwick at least 16 times a week for the last 20 years. Over the last couple of years, there has been a proliferation of “road fringe” in the area. Road fringe are those distracting, unnecessary and illegal signs along the road that do not make the area look historical nor beautiful.

During summer 2013, we have had to deal with signage for shingle shots, flu shots, antiques, power washing, art camp, buy your house, day camp, “A Signs” for the deck open, propane tank refills, directional signs on telephone poles and sidewalks, banners hanging on fences, polls and buildings.

One business really needs to relocate to Post Road rather than just put their signs all over Post Road. The Greek Festival was weeks ago but signs are still up.

The Historical Commission and Warwick Zoning are responsible to enforce the laws that are in place to regulate these “foad fringe” signs, but instead the roads look like they are decorated with cheap jewelry. It is apparent that those that actually enforce the signage laws travel by them since City Hall is located in Apponaug, but they have chosen not to.
