When it comes to the stage, absolutely anything is possible with dedication and a great imagination. Rocky Hill School’s Deckhands Theater Company, Trinity Repertory Company, and the Big Nazo performance group will come together to prove just how true that is when they stage “Little Shop of Horrors” this weekend at Rocky Hill’s Greenwich Bay campus.
Since 2013, Trinity has been partnering with Rocky Hill’s theater program. Rocky Hill is the only school to work with the theater company full-time, giving students the chance to learn about the craft from the theater’s education staff. The performance of “Little Shop of Horrors,” known for its dark but humorous tone and rock & roll inspired musical numbers, will also be the final show of the school’s collaboration with Trinity Rep.
This is the first time Big Nazo has worked with Rocky Hill, creating original props specific to the play. Though Trinity Rep may be a regionally well-recognized name, Big Nazo is an international group, known for their creation of magnificent stage props, especially masks and puppets. Their work is featured all over the country, even at Mardi Gras in New Orleans and at international festivals in Canada, Scotland, Portugal, and Japan.
The “creatures” Big Nazo makes, such as the famous talking plant at the center of the plot of “Little Shop of Horrors,” are the result of a creative process involving 3-D building techniques with various materials, including foam and fabric. The new Nazo Lab in Providence is just across from City Hall and is not only a place for the presentation of the creatures the group makes but also a place to build them. The extravagant and comically over-the-top creations have gained Big Nazo a fantastic reputation, and their contribution to the production will not go unnoticed.
The students of the Rocky Hill theater company have been given a unique and exciting opportunity to work with so many experienced and talented professionals, and it is now time for them to show how much the hard work of everyone involved has paid off. “Little Shop of Horrors” will be performed at Rocky Hill’s theater on their campus in East Greenwich this Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
