Rotary hosts Glenn Miller Orchestra July 9 at Rhodes

The Glenn Miller Orchestra, one of the most popular and sought after big bands in the world today, will perform for both listening and dancing at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston Thursday evening, July 9. Presented by the Rotary Club of Providence, this delightful summer night of Swing begins at 8 p.m. Admission is $30 per person; tickets are available at www.ProvidenceRotary.org or by calling 209-9547.

The present Glenn Miller Orchestra was formed in 1956 and has been touring consistently since, playing an average of 300 live dates a year all around the world. It was patterned on the hugely successful Glenn Miller Orchestra of the 1930s and ’40s, which produced such hits as “Tuxedo Junction,” “In The Mood” and “Pennsylvania 6-5000.” Miller served in the Army during World War II, creating the Glenn Miller Army Air Force Band, performing 800 times in less than one year.

In the fall of 1944, the band was scheduled to be sent on a six-week tour of Europe and would be stationed in Paris during that time. Miller decided to go ahead, in order to make the proper arrangements for the group’s arrival. And so, on Dec. 15, Glenn Miller boarded a transport plane to Paris, never to be seen again.

His favorite quotation was from Duke Ellington: “It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing!”
