Ramos, Woods help Pats rout Cougars

The Pilgrim boys’ soccer team pushed its unbeaten streak to seven games with a convincing, 7-0 victory over North Providence at home on Thursday.

The Pats displayed a balanced offensive attack, with several players getting on the score sheet.

Leading the way was striker Aaron Ramos with three goals, while junior captain Matt Woods added two goals and an assist. Dom DeNuccio and Collin Murphy also added a goal apiece, and forward Evan O’Connor dished out a pair of assists.

Pilgrim outshot the Cougars 17-1 in the victory, dominating both sides of the field to improve to 4-0-3 on the season. It is just one of two unbeaten teams remaining in Division III, with Burrillville sitting atop the standings with a 6-0-1 record. The Pats and Broncos tied, 1-1, in their only meeting this season.

Pilgrim was back in action on Monday when it hosted one-win Paul Cuffee, but results were unavailable at press time. It will also play at Ponaganset on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

Titans stave off Patriots’ comeback bid

It wasn’t easy, but the Toll Gate girls’ volleyball team continued its winning ways on Wednesday at Portsmouth, emerging victorious, 3-2, in a five-set thriller to improve to 7-1 in Division II-South.

The Titans took two of the first three sets, winning the first and third sets. But, Toll Gate couldn’t end the match in four sets, with Portsmouth battling back to tie the match at 2 with a 25-23 edge.

Toll Gate would bear down and clinch the win in the fifth and final set, though, taking it by a narrow margin, 15-13.

Meghan Murray led the way with seven kills and three blocks for first-place Toll Gate. Katelyn and Lauren Stamps also gave the Patriots fits, providing big serving and hitting at the net.

Toll Gate will continue league play on Thursday when it hosts West Warwick at 6 p.m.

Washed out

Smithfield cancelled its non-league football game against Pilgrim on Friday night due to unplayable field conditions because of heavy rain.

As of right now, there is no makeup date for that game.

Pilgrim will take the field again this Friday against Westerly (2-1) at 7 p.m. at Warwick Vets.
