Avenue of flags

Started in the mid-1960s by Frank Aldrich, the Pawtuxet Memorial Cemetery continues the tradition of exhibiting the casket flags of veterans buried at the cemetery for the Memorial Day weekend. Bill Douglas who started work at the cemetery in 1976 said the process of displaying the flags involves neighbors and the families of those deceased who are buried at the cemetery. They volunteer their time to affix the flags to poles and then place them along the roads that weave through the cemetery. At the conclusion of the display, or if interrupted by inclement weather, the flags are folded and stored in plastic bags for the next year. Bill was found Sunday afternoon checking on the flags and weighing the forecast for Monday whether he should start taking all 306 of them down. They came down.

God bless you Bill, and Frank, and all the volunteers.
