(Knights and witches

galore)

This one is filled with good and bad knights, witches and monsters, and a dumb plot about Tom, the “seventh son of the seventh son” (Ben Barnes) who becomes apprentice to Gregory, an old, grumpy but wise knight (Jeff Bridges).

Bridges is the only saving grace in this familiar tale that also stars Julianne Moore as the bad witch and Alicia Vikander as her daughter Alice. Tom and Alice fall in love, which complicates Gregory’s job of teaching his young apprentice how to find and kill witches. What’s a handsome young knight to do?

Tom dons a magic amulet around his neck to protect him, which Alice steals from him. He must battle her wicked mother’s henchmen and a variety of monsters, while his mentor fills him with all sorts of knowledge, some of which makes little sense.

There are some interesting shots of the mountainous landscape and some decent makeup for the monsters, but “Seventh Son” has little new to offer.

Rated PG-13, with violence and some profanity.
