Sandwich Junction: A familiar place to warm your soul

Posted

Two burly men stride into the Sandwich Junction and queue up behind the line that has already formed in front of the deli counter, even though it is only 11:00 in the morning. Studying the "Specials" board, they chose their favorite sandwiches- for one, it's the Cajun Turkey with Pepperjack Cheese; for the other, it's a custom version of prosciutto, provolone and red roasted peppers (yes, they do take special orders!). This mid-morning scene is typical at Sandwich Junction, a family-run sandwich shop tucked up against the railroad tracks in Warwick. This junction of food and friendly service is a favorite destination for moms on the run, businessmen and women, seekers of that homemade fare - and burly construction workers everywhere.

Things are heating up at the Sandwich Junction. As the days begin to turn colder, owner Kathy Ruginski and her faithful crew are serving up their heart-warming soups, hot sandwiches and ~ if you are lucky ~ their hearty, chunky beef chili. Top on their list of popular options is the Portuguese Kale soup, a brothy chicken-based soup swimming with kale, red kidney beans, carrots, potatoes, and spicy chorizo sausage. Their classic chicken and rice soup is always on the menu ~ by the cup or the bowl ~ it warms you to the soul. Try one of the railroad-themed hot sandwiches: the "Cannonball Express" (homemade meatballs and provolone) or the "Caboose" (Eggplant, meatball and provolone), or their popular Chicken Parm or spicy Buffalo Chicken sandwiches, to name a few.

Sandwich Junction has an everyday menu of hot and cold sandwiches, fresh salads, favorites from the fryer such as sweet potato fries and chicken wings, and even cooked-to-order burgers. As burly man #1 says: "If you have fifteen minutes, their burgers are out of this world!" There are also daily specials to choose from here with offerings such as the post-Thanksgiving Maple Turkey with Cranberry Sauce served on a multi-grain roll and the Roast Beef with melted Swiss cheese sandwiches.

Everything here at the Junction is both fresh and very affordable. Most of the menu items are under $8.00, to say nothing of the list of tasty .99 side orders and items from the grill and fryer. Best of all are their selection of homemade desserts, including the popular "Blueberry Dream," chocolate-y brownies and moist carrot cake. Simply decadent.

Come to Sandwich Junction, located off Post Road at 86 Kilvert Street, just two blocks north of the airport. Hours are Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm. CASH only please.
