Sandwich Junction: For homemade food that will warm you from head to toe

Posted

t is a soup kind of day - rainy, wet and cold to the core. American author Laurie Colwin once penned the words "To feel safe and warm on a cold, wet night, all you really need is SOUP!" The great composer Ludwig van Beethoven wrote of those who make soup: "Only the pure in heart can make good soup", and time has certainly borne out this sentiment. If Beethoven had lived in today's Warwick, Rhode Island, there is a good chance he would have said these words of Kathy Ruginski, the "pure-hearted" cook and owner of Sandwich Junction on Kilvert Street. Every weekday, Ruginski and her fellow cooks at this cozy eatery are stirring up a big, hot and steamy pot of homemade soup for their patrons, one and all.

As soon as you pass through the doors of Sandwich Junction, you are met with the aroma of fragrant broth, swimming with onions, celery, carrots, parsley and chunks of chicken or sausage as it wafts through the room. The variety of soup options here expands in the winter to include not only the everyday crowd-pleaser of Chicken and Rice, but also these favorites: Tuscan white bean and sausage, Portuguese Kale (with spicy chorizo), Chicken Pot Pie soup and even Beef Stew soup. Each of these soups is made fresh every day, right on the premises. Add to this list of soups a piping hot crock of Chunky Beef Chili, a bowl of "Dirty Rice" or a casserole of mouth-watering Baked Ziti, and you are warm from the inside out.

Sandwich Junction is a family-owned restaurant that has been serving up fresh wholesome lunch food for over 36 years. Their longtime, consistent preparation of homemade hot and cold sandwiches, soups, salads, side dishes and daily specials has made them a popular destination for locals and newcomers alike since 1977. In keeping with its location tucked up against the train tracks, all the sandwich choices on the menu reference the legacy of the train junction stop.

Everything here is not only fresh, it is also very affordable. Most of these offerings are under $10.00, to say nothing of the list of tasty .99 side orders and items from the grill and fryer such as a juicy burger or sweet potato fries. Best of all are their selection of decadent desserts, including chocolate-y brownies and the popular "Blueberry Dream," a delectable marriage of a shortbread crust, a blueberry and crushed walnut filling, all topped with smooth cream cheese frosting.

Come get warm at the Sandwich Junction, located at 86 Kilvert Street off Post Road between Sovereign Bank and Wendy's, two blocks north of the airport. Hours are Monday through Friday 10 am to 4 pm.
