Save The Bay offers six special seal tours

On Oct. 22, Nov. 12 and Dec. 3 Save The Bay’s Westerly Seal Tours will be narrated by special guests Dr. Allison Tuttle and Janelle Schuh of Mystic Aquarium, who will share their expertise and personal insights on the harbor seals that visit local waters during winter months.

The 90-minute scenic tours down the Pawcatuck River into Little Narragansett Bay will be held at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. on each of the tour dates. Guests can admire Westerly’s fall foliage and enjoy peaceful views of winter harbor seal visitors as they rest on the shorelines and nearby rocks. Harbor Seals were recently named the Rhode Island State Marine Mammal.

Westerly Seal Tours are $22 for non-members and $17 for all members, seniors and children ages 3-12. Mystic Aquarium members enjoy Save The Bay’s member rate on these special tours. Tours depart from Viking Marina at 19 Margin Street, Westerly. For more information and to purchase tour tickets, visit Save The Bay’s seal tour website at www.savebay.org/seals or call 203-7325.

Tuttle is vice president of biological programs at Mystic Aquarium and serves as staff veterinarian and director of animal care in the aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program. This program is used as a rehabilitation clinic specifically designed for managing different seal species during their rehabilitation.

Schuh is the stranding coordinator for Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Program, most notably responsible for seal rescues and taking care of stranded animals.

Save The Bay has offered seal tours for more than 15 years throughout the months of October through April, when harbor seals come into the harbor to feed. Unlike visits to a zoo or aquarium, these boat tours offer guests the exclusive experience of seeing winter seals in their natural habitat. Save The Bay’s Westerly Seal Tours run through December 31, while Newport Seal Tours will begin on Nov. 11 and run through April 30, 2017. Fall River seal tours will take place in March and April 2017.

For more information and to purchase tour tickets, visit Save The Bay’s seal tour website at www.savebay.org/seals or call 203-7325.
