Rhode Island PTA President Amie Galipeau announced recently that Daniel Chang, a second grade student at Harold F. Scott Elementary School in Warwick, has been honored by the National PTA for achievement in the arts through their Reflections Program.

Chang’s artwork, titled “Dream and Inspiration,” was recently recognized with an Outstanding Interpretation in the category of Visual Arts, Primary Division. Chang will receive an all-expense-paid trip for him and one adult to the National PTA Convention in Austin, Texas this summer and an $800 arts education award. In addition, a $200 Arts Education Award will be given to Harold F. Scott Elementary School PTA by National PTA.

Also recognized in this year’s event is Zoe Rose Estrella, a sixth grade student also at Scott Elementary School. Zoe’s photography, titled “Believe, Dream, and Inspire,” was recognized with an Award of Merit in the category of Photography, Middle School division.

Rhode Island PTA’s Reflections Program, led by Reflections Chairperson John Devine, provides students the opportunity to explore the arts and be recognized for their achievements.

Nearly 300,000 students from across the country, and in American schools overseas, participate annually in the National PTA’s Reflections program. The awards program spans six arts categories (Dance Choreography, Film Production, Music Composition, Photography, Literature, and Visual Arts) across four grade divisions and the Special Artist Division, intended for students whose physical, cognitive or mental health challenges meet ADA guidelines. This year, students explored the arts and the world around them through the theme “Dream, Believe, Inspire.”

National Award recipients will be recognized in a public gallery at the U.S. Department of Education, in Washington, D.C. during the months of January and February 2015. All award winners will be featured at the 2014 PTA Convention in Austin, Texas from June 19 to 22. This summer, all award winners will be featured in the National PTA Reflections Online Gallery of Artwork as well.

The Reflections program is the National PTA’s cornerstone arts program. It was developed in 1969 by Colorado’s PTA President Mary Lou Anderson to encourage students to explore their talents and express themselves. Since then, the Reflections program has inspired millions of students to reflect on a specific theme and create original artwork. National PTA believes every child deserves a quality arts education. Participation in arts programs like Reflections levels the playing field for underserved students, develops the whole child, nurtures creativity and teamwork, and connects families and schools to one another and their communities.
