Search continues for dog that bolted after arriving at airport

HAPPY THANKSGIVING NEWS UPDATE! It was quite an ordeal, but Socks was finally found, caught, and returned home! Find the complete story of his time on the run in our next edition.

Original story below.

What started off as a gesture of good will has turned into a nightmare for Toni-Ann Hanna of West Greenwich.

Hanna and her boyfriend volunteered to care for the dogs of a family member while he underwent six months of training with the United States Coast Guard. The two dogs were placed on a flight from Florida, arriving Friday, November 13 at Green Airport.

That part of the connection went without a hitch. Summer and Socks, both a mix of Labrador and Golden Retriever, were relieved to finally be on the ground. They are both shorthaired dogs.

But then plans started to unravel.

“This was the first time we met the dogs and the first time they were being shipped via airline travel. They also had a layover flight. When they arrived, they were nervous, anxious and afraid,” said Hanna.

They were able to get Summer, who was in her crate, into one car, but the crate containing Socks wouldn’t fit into a second car. The decision was made to get him out of the crate.

Socks slipped loose and bolted from the airport cargo facility area. Hanna, her boyfriend and airport police gave chase, but Socks eluded them.

Since then Hanna has mounted an all-out campaign to find Socks. She’s posted pictures on Facebook, contacted area animal shelters and put up posters in neighborhoods surrounding the airport. There was a reported sighting near the National Guard Armory on Airport Road and another last Thursday that a dog fitting the description had been seen behind a restaurant on Post Road. Hanna has followed up each of the leads, but to no avail.

A real estate agent, Hanna has taken time off from work following up on calls and visiting area animal shelters in the off-hand chance he may have been picked up. She said Monday that she is trying to locate an “animal communicator” to assist in trying to locate the dog.

The dog’s owner has been notified, but now that his basic training has started he is no longer in communication.

“We just want to find Socks and bring him home. We ask that no one chases the dog or approach the dog, but rather follow from a distance and call 401-585-0855,” Hanna said.

Ok, I feel really badly for Socks. No dog should have to be put through so much trauma.

But, where was the story about the missing greyhound?

I am sure everyone reading this saw the missing dog signs all over Warwick back a couple of months. Didn't that dog deserve a mention in the paper? Maybe a little press would have helped.

    Just saying...
