Everything is starting to come together for Senerchia Post 74.

After dropping three of its first four games to open the summer, the Hawks have now won seven of its last eight to improve their record to 8-4.

Their latest victories came on Sunday as Senerchia swept a twin bill from East Coast Beverages – Post 29, taking the first game, 1-0, before coming away with a 5-2 win in game two.

In game one, Senerchia plated its lone run in the bottom of the third on a Brady Chant RBI single, but that proved to be all it would need.

That’s because left-hander Caleb Wurster was in control from start to finish on the bump, going the distance without yielding a run in a complete-game shutout.

Wurster struggled with his command a bit early, allowing four walks over the first three innings. However, he would settle in, dominating over the final four innings as just two Post 29 hitters reached base.

Wurster visibly got stronger as the game wore on.

“I thought his last three or four innings were his strongest,” Senerchia head coach Chris Sheehan said. “He’s been throwing the ball really well for us and just keeps getting better and better. I think he’s going to be really good – he developed over the course of the high school season. That was a great effort by him today going the distance. He really won that game for us.”

The opportunity to showcase himself in front of Hendricken coaches can’t be duplicated for Wurster. The southpaw was on Hendricken’s varsity squad this spring, but didn’t see many innings because of the horses at the front of the Hawks’ rotation.

This summer it looks like he’s set out to prove that he deserves a spot in Hendricken’s exclusive rotation next spring, and he’s making quite the case.

“He has a ton of potential and, right now, it looks like he’s going to live up to that,” Sheehan said of Wurster. “He didn’t get a ton of innings this year, but we had a lot of confidence in him coming out of the bullpen. I think he’ll translate well into a starter for us next year.”

With Wurster in command on the hill, Hendricken’s offense struggled a bit against Post 29 right-hander Dillon Bordeleau.

But Senerchia was able to scrape a run across in the third.

Third baseman Jarrad Grossguth led off the inning with the Hawks’ first hit of the game, a base hit up the middle. After Colin McBride moved Grossguth to second with a sacrifice bunt, Billy Roberge drew a walk to put runners on first and second with one out.

The lineup then turned over with Brady Chant coming to the plate at the top of the order.

Chant would deliver the lone RBI hit, lining a pitch to left field to score Grossguth and make it a 1-0 game.

Chant moved to second when the throw to home scurried away from Post 29 catcher Brian McCormick.

With runners on second and third and still just one out, it looked as if the Hawks would pile on to their lead.

But Bordeleau would bear down to minimize the damage, getting John Willette to fly out to centerfield before Andrew Ciacciarelli rolled over to third to end the threat.

Just the one run would prove to be more than enough, though.

Wurster would allow one runner to reach in the fifth and sixth innings respectively, but Post 29 couldn’t muster any sort of rally. He would then retire East Coast Beverages in order in the seventh to seal the deal and give Senerchia its seventh win of the season.

In game two, freshman Nico Salvaggio picked up the win on the hill for the Hawks, tossing five shutout innings. Post 29 rallied for two runs in the seventh, but Dave Defusco came on to record the final two outs to leave the bases loaded.

Senerchia was back in action on Monday night at Providence Post 56, but results were unavailable at press time.

It will now have a week off from league play as it will play in an annual legion tournament in Lake George, N.Y.
