Olivia King was just a sophomore this year for Pilgrim, but she put together one of the best all-around seasons in recent memory.
King, who started behind the plate for the Pats, posted an average of .559 with 38 RBIs, which Head Coach Bill Aquilante believed was a team record.
“There was a point where you couldn’t get her out,” Aquilante said of King.
Although King just concluded her second season, she has compiled a great deal of varsity experience, starting as both a freshman and sophomore.
Because of that experience, Aquilante put his faith in the backstop, giving her additional responsibilities this spring. It’s safe to say that King didn’t disappoint.
“We gave her a lot more responsibilities this year – we let her call her own pitches behind the plate,” Aquilante said. “Because she started as a freshman, it was like having a senior out there with the amount of time she’s played. She was outstanding this year.”
After receiving a First Team All-Division nod this season, King will headline the list of Pilgrim returners for next season, as she’ll look to lead the Pats to another deep playoff run.
“Luckily she has more years left,” Aquilante said. “Sometimes I have to remind myself that she’s only a sophomore.”
In addition to her offensive numbers, it was hard to find another catcher in D-II that was better than King defensively.
In her second season working with pitcher Morgan Almon, the battery helped stifle opposing lineups, as Pilgrim posted a 10-6 record and earned a fourth-place finish in the playoffs.
Because of her offensive and defensive contributions, Olivia King is the 2016 Warwick Beacon Softball Player of the Year.
