A well-known national fast food chain has announced plans to open its first store in Rhode Island, with more set to follow.
Sonic Drive-In last week said its first new franchisee in the state would open a location in the Providence area in mid-2015, while the second new franchisee intends to open two stores in the coming years. The company did not specify where the initial restaurants would be built, but local media reports earlier this year indicated a site on Route 44 in Smithfield was under consideration.
Overall, the Oklahoma-based company is planning to open 20 to 25 stores in the state, and additional franchisees are being sought. Rhode Island will be the 45th state in which Sonic operates.
The move into the Ocean State is part of a broader Northeast expansion by Sonic, which operates 3,500 drive-in locations and has its greatest presence in the South and Central Plains. As part of the push to colder climates, the chain – which sells burgers, hot dogs, chicken, ice cream, assorted sides and beverages – has adapted the design of its traditional drive-in eateries to include indoor dining areas.
According to a press release, Sonic will have development executives in Boston for franchise discovery meetings. The executives will also take part in the New England Food Show from March 15-16 in Boston. More information is available online at sonicfranchises.com.
