St. Kevin Church hosts ‘honoring our heroes concert’ this Friday

An “Honoring Our Heroes Concert” will be held Friday at St. Kevin Church. The free concert that will be held in the church starts at 7 p.m. will pay tribute to members of the armed service and first responders.

The 88th Army Band, and the Choirs of St. Kevin and St. Rita Parishes will perform. In honoring Rhode Island heroes, patriotic songs will also be performed. The Rhode Island National Guard, Warwick Police Department, and Warwick Fire Department color guards will be present.

Any donations made will go to the Station Fire Memorial Foundation that is seeing to raise $2 million to build a memorial park for the 100 people who lost their lives in the Feb. 20, 2003 Station Nightclub fire in West Warwick.

More than $1.7 million of the goal has been raised; construction of the memorial has started and the plan is for the memorial to officially open this fall.

St. Kevin is not the only church making efforts for this memorial park. St. Benedict Church will host a pasta dinner May 26 at the church to raise money as well.

The memorial park will serve as a peaceful environment for whoever faced the harsh tragedy that took place 13 years ago. Father Robert Marciano, pastor of St. Kevin, who was present as chaplain of the Warwick fire and police departments the night that it occurred, said in a statement that the occurrence was “life changing…Obviously we train a lot for those extraordinary events, but you’re never really prepared for the overwhelming reality of what occurred that night.”

Father Maricano served not only as chaplain, but also as a source of comfort to families and injured victims of the fire.
