St. Philip wins state, New England titles

With players from Johnston and Smithfield, St. Philip of Greenville won state and New England championships in the girls’ basketball CYO fifth and sixth grade parish division. After an undefeated regular season, the team beat St. Theresa of Tiverton and St. Luke of Barrington to capture the state championship in early March. That qualified the team for the 56th annual New England CYO Tournament, and St. Philip continued to shine. It beat St. John Cromwell of Norwich, Conn., 33-9, St. Denis of Boston, 41-33, and Christ the King of Burlington, Vt., 32-14 to win the regional crown.
