Stanley W. “Popi” Phillips

Stanley W. “Popi” Phillips, 90, of Bentley Road, Warwick, died on Friday, August 15, 2014, at Avalon Nursing Home in Warwick, he was the loving husband of Margaret Anne (Murray) for 68 years.

Stanley was a 1942 graduate of Aldrich High School and volunteered for the Marine Corps in September 1942, and was assigned to the 1st Marine Division. Stan proudly served in Melbourne, Australia, and was involved in four major World War II invasions in New Guinea, Cape Gloucester, Peleliu, and Okinawa.

After the Marine Corps, Stanley worked for the U.S. Navy at Quonset Point, RI, and Norfolk, VA, retiring in 1979 as a Supervisory Production Controller. Stan was an avid skier and loved to travel. He was an expert marksman and earned several honors as a member of competitive rifle teams.

Stan leaves a daughter, Dianne L. Stebbins and her husband, Henry, of Cranston; three grandchildren, Mary-Ellen Ide, Christine Gendreau and her husband, Michael, and Russell C. Ide and his wife Jennifer. He is also a great-grandfather of eight; and the grandfather of the late Kathleen Frink; and great-grandfather of the late Ryan Frink.

His funeral was held on Monday, August 18, from the Barrett & Cotter Funeral Home, 1328 Warwick Avenue, Spring Green, Warwick, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Peter Church, 350 Fair Street, Warwick. Burial with military honors was in Pawtuxet Memorial Park, Warwick.
