Director: Internal probe after séance report found potential criminal activity

Posted

Based on information resulting from an internal investigation, Department of Corrections Director A.T. Wall has requested the involvement of Rhode Island State Police to probe possible criminal activity within the department.

“I have been briefed on a regular basis by my Internal Affairs Unit since I ordered an investigation into allegations of misconduct by several key staff members at the Department of Corrections,” Wall said in a March 26 statement. “At our most recent meeting, I learned that some of the actions alleged may indicate criminal activity. Under these circumstances I have contacted Colonel Steven O’Donnell to ask that the Rhode Island State Police enter the case and he has agreed to do so.”

Four corrections employees were recently placed on administrative leave after reports surfaced that a corrections officer at the ACI in Cranston had been called in from home following an overnight shift and asked to perform a séance. That prompted the internal investigation, which then resulted in Wall reaching out to state police.

Wall in his statement said he has notified Gov. Lincoln Chafee regarding the situation.

“Our inspectors will assist state police officials as they look into the matter,” he said. “In order to protect the integrity of their investigation, henceforth any inquiries should be directed to the state police.”
