Still the world’s policeman

To the Editor:

With Eastern Syria and Northern Iraq in the hands of ISIS/ISIL, the Middle East is once again on the edge of an abyss. After a costly and tiresome decade-long Iraq War, America is hesitant to re-enter another conflict in the region. Many no longer wish the U.S. to be the world’s policeman.

However, the looming threat has already destabilized the tentative security established by our troops’ arduous and laborious work. Without a Status of Forces agreement left in place to ensure responsiveness in case of crisis, the door had been opened for just the type of instability, which has now ensnared the country.

Since the 7th century, the Sunnis and Shiites have assaulted and assailed each other over differing interpretations of the meaning of the writings of Mohammed. ISIS/ISIL has used the Koran as a license to cause mayhem and to commit murder. Such zealotry cannot be reasoned with. The only response respected by these myopic aggressors is superior force.

Currently, the United States has used air power to help the Kurds and other peace-seeking Iraqis who are attempting to resist these crusaders. Although the efforts have been valiant, they may be insufficient in light of the organization and armament well used by ISIS/ISIL.

Despite the stated fact that the administration has yet to establish a set policy or plan regarding this dangerous adventure, President Obama has expressed his reluctance to commit ground forces again. America may not have a choice, as the oncoming total instability of the region is probable. Precious oil resources and Israel’s sovereignty cannot be sacrificed. Furthermore, a radical theocracy would prove increasingly territorial and would spread like a geopolitical cancer that might grow to engulf the Northern African Continent as well. Would another attack on America be beyond their designs when they have gained that presumed degree of strength?

These aggressors want to destroy civilization itself in favor of an archaic vision of a fundamentalist world that is the antithesis of a society’s progression and accomplishment. Since they cannot be negotiated or reasoned with, we may have to unsheathe our powerful sword of righteousness once again in order to thwart their naked aggression. Unfortunately, the United States cannot escape being the world’s policeman.

Western civilization is under attack by these animals. They will come for us if we don't wipe them out.
