Strong doubles play helps Titans to fourth straight win

The Toll Gate girls’ tennis team moved down from Division I to Division II for this season, and the Titans are currently reaping the benefits of the move.

They rattled off their fourth consecutive victory on Friday, downing visiting Lincoln, 5-2, at Winman Junior High School to improve to 4-1 on the season.

The Titans earned wins in two of the four singles matches while dominating doubles play, edging the Lions in all three of those matches.

No. 2 singles player Ava Sammartino rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Hannah Ciotti, and Toll Gate’s Corinne Gregoire took control of her No. 4 singles match as well, downing Alison Banks 6-1, 6-4.

No. 1 singles player Laurel Ten Eyck was edged out by Lincoln’s top player, Natalie DerHagopian, 2-6, 4-6, and Lincoln got its only other win in No. 3 singles, where Alexus Phommachanh outlasted Toll Gate’s Maddy Capaldi 7-5, 6-3.

But Toll Gate separated itself from Lincoln with its doubles play.

The Titans’ top doubles team of Jenn Li and Martha Davis clinched a straight-sets win over Lincoln’s duo of Bella Maris and Aynur Esenova 6-2, 7-5.

And the Titans continued their dominance from there, with the No. 2 doubles team of Sabrina Dengel and Elizabeth Brousseau and the tandem of Larissa Anika and Juliana Glick at No. 3 doubles cruising to straight-set wins.

After dropping its first match of the season, 5-2, to Cumberland, it seems as though Toll Gate has settled in and should encounter a great deal of success in D-II.

It will have its toughest test to date today, however, as Toll Gate is set to welcome undefeated Prout (5-0) to Winman for a 4 p.m. start.

The Titans will also travel to Cranston West at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday to take on the Falcons.
