Public rosary rally

St.Brigid’s Church, 1231 Plainfield St. in Johnston, will be holding its annual public rosary rally on Oct. 10 at noon. This nationwide rosary rally is for the devotion to the Mother of God. It will be held at the side of Pocasset and Plainfield Street. All are welcome to participate.

Walk-a-thon

Thornton Elementary School is hosting a Walk-a-thon to support the Thornton Community Closet Food Bank from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10, at Johnston Memorial Park. Registration begins at 9:45 a.m. and runs through 1:45 p.m. There are several ways to participate, including a $5 donation; a $5 minimum sponsorship by friends or family; or the donation of five canned food items, five boxes of macaroni, two jars of peanut butter, or two boxes of cereal.

Pet adoption day

Michael Morse and his wife, Cheryl, live in Warwick. Michael, a retired rescue captain with the Providence Fire Department, is the author of three books, including two on firefighting and EMS. His latest, “Mr. Wilson Makes It Home,” is a touching story about his family’s decision to adopt a rescue dog, and how he credits the dog with, in turn, rescuing his family. Morse and Mr. Wilson will be at PetSmart, 1386 Atwood Ave. in Johnston, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 for the Friends of Homeless Animals adoption event. Morse will also be part of an auction at their November fundraiser. Follow “Mr. Wilson Makes It Home” on the Facebook page by that name or at homewithmrwilson.blogspot.com.

Tales of the macabre

The Mohr Library will feature “The Corpse That Drove a Hearse” and other true tales of the macabre on Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m. Author and historian Jim Ignasher of Smithfield will present strange but true tales just in time for Halloween.  These are not ghost stories, but historically documented cases virtually forgotten since they occurred. Please note that these stories are true, and will be presented in a tasteful manner, however, due to subject matter, the presentation is geared for adults and is not recommended for children. For more information, contact the Mohr Library at 231-4980, ext. 6.

Chamber Business

After Hours

The North Central Chamber of Commerce will hold its monthly Business After Hours networking event on Oct. 28 from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. at Raffi Merjik and Associates, located at 26 Hartford Pike in North Scituate. Snacks, refreshments, beer and wine will be served. Share your ideas, connect with other businesses in the community, get inspired and make some new friends at the Chamber. Gentian Garden

Club meeting

The next Gentian Garden Club meeting will be held Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Community House, located at 546 West Greenwich Road in North Scituate. This month’s presentation will be “From Field to Vase.” This program will feature floral designer Polly Hutchison of Robin Hollow Farm, who will give a demonstration on designing with local, seasonal plant material. The public is invited to attend and to also learn more about the Garden Club. Additionally, birds and conservation chair Ann Huntoon our will speak on the Dark-eye Junco. Christine Pietropaolo will be creating a seasonal floral arrangement for the meeting refreshment table.

Amazing Wish Race

Children’s Wishes will hold its sixth annual Amazing Wish Race on Saturday, Oct. 17. The race kickoff will be at the Knight of Columbus, 475 Sandy Lane in Warwick, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., and will be hosted by Louie Stravato of television’s “The Amazing Race.” At 11 a.m. sharp, teams will receive their first clue for this statewide scavenger hunt, and the race will begin. Teams of up to four can register at crowdrise.com/6thAnnualAmazingWishRace.

The registration fee is $30 per person. Each participant will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt and a free ticket to the wrap-up awards party back at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 6 p.m. that night. Non-participants can purchase tickets to the after-party event in advance or at the door for a $10 donation.

Flashlight Night

at Confreda

Greenhouses & Farms

Confreda’s Flashlight Night at The MAiZE will be held on Oct. 8 and Oct. 22 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Confreda Greenhouses and Farms, located at 2150 Scituate Ave. in Cranston. Come to the MAiZE for a night of twilight hayrides and flashlight tours, finishing up with ghost stories and s’mores by the fire. It’s family fun for all ages. Admission is $10, and children under two are free. Each child will receive a free mini flashlight. Tickets are available on the night of the event, but spaces fill up fast, so advance purchases are recommended. Large groups are also welcome. Call 401-827-5000 to reserve a space.

 

Tickled Pink

On Oct. 30 at 6 p.m., “Tickled Pink” will be featured at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet, 60 Rhodes Place in Cranston. Women & Infants’ tradition of fun continues with the 12th annual “Tickled Pink” event, featuring acclaimed speaker, author and international stress management and humor consultant Loretta Laroche.  Ribbon cutting

Join the North Central Chamber of Commerce for a ribbon cutting festivities at Sherwin Williams on Saturday, Oct. 10 at noon. Check out the new store, and the team at Sherwin Williams will have special activities. Stick around for the ribbon cutting at 12:30 p.m. Get to know the painting experts and new members. The new store is located next to Burlington Coat Factory in the Stone Hill Marketplace on Atwood Ave. in Johnston. Winter Bazaar

A Winter Bazaar will be held on Nov. 7 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Trinity Assembly of God 2119 Hartford Ave. in Johnston. It will feature many vendors including lunch, the grannies attic section (yard sale items) and our silent auction. Vendors include Avon, handmade items of all sorts, jams, bows, tutus, music, art and more.

Tanzi to speak

at Cranston East

Dr. Rudolph E. Tanzi, a Cranston native and one of the world’s foremost Alzheimer’s disease researchers, is coming back to his hometown on Oct. 28 to benefit the Cranston Senior Enrichment Center with his presentation, “Ending Alzheimer’s Disease by 2025.” Tickets are $25 for general admission, and $125 tickets include a VIP reception and book signing. Jeep Run for Animals

There will be a Jeep Run for Animals, sponsored by Pet Supplies Plus and Defenders of Animals Inc., on Oct. 25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be pizza and beverages, as well as a 50/50 raffle, gift cards and other raffles. Did You Know?

Columbus Day is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Before it became a legal federal holiday in 1971, many states celebrated Columbus Day on Oct. 12.

It marks Christopher Columbus’ first voyage to America. He landed on the island of Guanahani in the Bahamas on Oct. 12, 1492. Columbus and a crew of 90 people had set sail about 10 weeks earlier aboard their ships, the Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria. (Columbus Day Fun Facts)
