Four second-half goals send Quakers past Titans

The Toll Gate boys’ soccer team defended well against undefeated Moses Brown for most of their matchup on Tuesday night at Bend Street, but it was an arduous task to earn a point given the matchup.

Toll Gate had scored the fewest goals in Division II, entering the game with just nine, while Moses Brown’s three scores allowed were the fewest in the league.

The Titans allowed two goals in the first half to keep comeback hopes alive at intermission, but the Quakers became too much for the exhausted Toll Gate defense. Moses Brown notched four goals in the second half to cruise to a 6-0 victory.

“That’s been our M.O. all year. We’ve been playing decent in the first half, we can’t punch one in and as soon as the opposition generates a little bit of offense in the second half, we tend to crumble a little bit,” Toll Gate head coach Mike Kenney said. “It’s a good group, and they’re working hard, but we’ve got to learn how to win.”

Richard Cady and John Bennett had the strongest output on defense for the Titans, getting to the ball aggressively and helping to keep the Quakers (9-0-0) off the board for about the first 15 minutes.

Eventually, though, Division II’s leader in goal differential () found its offensive groove. Drew Younkin dribbled inside the Titans’ box in the 13th minute, where he found Alvin Themistocle on a cross for the first score of the night.

Rio Holzwarth added another just before halftime when he threaded a shot between two defenders and past the dive of senior goalkeeper Kyle Brown.

Brown was stellar in net, recording double-digit saves, but his defense started to show signs of breaking down in the second half.

“Kyle Brown is one of the best goalies,” Kenney said. “It’s unfortunate for [his] record, but he’s one of the best goalies around. He’s kept us in games so far, the record doesn’t indicate it. He’s made some outstanding saves.”

Brown’s long frame helped him reach for some of the Quakers’ attempts, saving the score from reaching double digits. The Titans (1-8-0) held off the furious Moses Brown offense with a frenetic defense pattern, spreading seven players past the midline.

Finally, in the 56th minute, the Quakers were able to break through for their first goal of the half. Tysson Sangermano headed in a corner kick to up the lead to 3-0.

From there, the floodgates opened.

Moses Brown peppered the goal as Toll Gate’s defense struggled to keep up. Poom Mera, Euan Smith and Jon Reimer all added tallies of their own in the final 17 minutes of action to put the game out of reach.

They will have to rebound quickly for a contest with Mt. Hope on the road tonight at 6 p.m. The Huskies should provide an easier matchup for the Titans, as they have amassed a 2-3-4 record to this point.

“Right now we need something to pop for us to get our confidence back,” Kenney said. “We’re struggling scoring. We’re not getting looks, and if we do, we’re misfiring. We’ve been shooting and doing a lot of different things in practice that they seem to get. It’s got to translate to a game, and right now we’re struggling to do that.”
