(Romance and cuisine)

There are great movies, and there are awful movies. And frequently, there are nice little movies.

“The 100-foot Journey” is a nice little movie. Filled with a touch of romance and a touch of cuisine, the story will make you smile and leave you feeling good about the characters and how they resolve their differences and live happily ever after.

Helen Mirren plays Madame Mallory, owner of an exquisite French restaurant in a small French village. Her life and business are disrupted one day when an Indian family buys the rundown restaurant building directly across the street. She does everything within her power to stop the restaurant from opening.

Hassan (Manish Dayal) has learned to cook Indian food from his mother, who died tragically in a fire. His father (Om Puri) has moved the family from India to London and then to France, in the hope of bringing Indian food to Europe. Hassan develops a friendship with the pretty, young, souse chef (Charlotte Le Bon) across the street. They introduce each other to their cooking styles.

Meanwhile, Madame Mallory and Papa develop a love/hate relationship based mostly on cultural cuisine differences. You can see right where this one is going, as Mallory steals Hassan away from Papa and the two learn to share their differences.

Enjoy the predictable romances that develop and savor the French and Indian dishes (We had a craving for Indian food after the movie). Rated PG, with nothing offensive to the eyes, ears or tastes.
