“The Boxtrolls” is a lovely little stop-motion animated film that will provide great adventure for the young ones, while pleasing us older folks with some adventurous animation.

While it goes on a bit too long (1 hour and 37 minutes), it has an interesting story with a few morals thrown in.

The residents of Cheesebridge (“A Gouda place to live”) are disturbed by the boxtrolls, little creatures who live and hide in boxes beneath the streets of London.

They come out at night to rummage through the garbage, collecting all sorts of items that they turn into their own little inventions.

The white-hatted cheese tasters (The haves) hire the red-hatted exterminators (The have nots) to catch the boxtrolls, who everybody believes to be baby snatchers.

Little Winifred discovers a little boy who has been brought up by the boxtrolls and thinks he is one of them.

It takes some time for the boxtrolls and the exterminators to be seen for who they really are in this fairy tale, which is sometimes dark but always charming.

The kids will learn some lessons about seeing beneath the surface, and the adults will have some fun with the British humor.

We saw it in 3D, but you don’t need to spend the extra money to enjoy the wonderful drawings and stop-motion characters.

Rated PG, with nothing to worry about.
