(More hokey sci-fi)
We’ve sat through three of these hokey sci-fi “adventures,” which all leave us waiting for the next to see what happens to Tris and her friends as they escape from worn-torn Chicago to find hope for the future.
Tris (Shailene Woodley) and crew climb over the wall in dramatic fashion and head out into the barren wilderness, only to find a secret enclave in the middle of nowhere (Where did they get the materials to build this facility?) headed by an evil man called simply David (Jeff Daniels). The grass isn’t greener on the other side of the wall. In fact, there’s no grass anywhere. Just lots of mechanical devices, weird machines and hundreds of young people following a deranged leader.
Tris is madly in love with Four (Theo James), but their love affair is challenged when David decides that Tris is the only “pure” one in the group, using her to further his cause.
David takes Tris to Providence (not Rhode Island) to meet with the “committee.” Things go terribly wrong.
There’s lots of running around and killing. It’s hard to tell who is who and what the heck is going on. The crew ends up back where it started and there is still unrest.
Did they destroy David?
Will they bring the factions together?
Can they find peace and hope in Chicago?
We wouldn’t bet on it, but we’ll have to wait a while to find out.
Rated PG 13, with lots of violence.
