(Tense psychological thriller)

Every so often (not often enough) a movie comes along that captures our undivided attention due to great acting, direction and storytelling. “The Gift” is that type of movie, full of tension, surprises, twists and a great ending.

Simon (Jason Bateman) and his wife Robin (Rebecca Hall) have moved from Chicago to Los Angeles, where Simon is about to start a new job. They run into one of Simon’s high school classmates, whom Simon claims he does not remember.

Gordo is a bit weird, showing up at their palatial new home, leaving a gift on the front steps. Gordo manipulates himself into their lives, with Robin feeling a bit sorry for the lonely, socially awkward man, while Simon wants nothing to do with him.

This is one of those movies where we have to be careful not to reveal the intricate plot and just say, “Trust us. This is a compelling, intelligent, psychological movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the surprise ending.

As the plot thickens and secrets are revealed, you realize that there is more to Simon and Gordo’s past than Simon cares to share with his wife. When she begins to realize this, she becomes very conflicted.

Oh, how we want to tell you more, but let us just say that things are not always as they seem…and neither are people.

This is a tale of deception and bullying that leads to revenge and empowerment. If you like psychological movies that will keep you guessing to the surprising conclusion, don’t miss “The Gift.”

Rated R, with some frightening scenes.
