Taking a stand to prevent cancer

To the Editor:

On May 11 I will travel to Providence to represent cancer patients and survivors from Warwick to call on Rhode Island’s state legislature to make cancer related health policies a priority. In 2016 alone, an estimated 6,190 Rhode Islanders will be diagnosed with cancer. I will be joining over 75 American Cancer Society Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) volunteers from across the state to advocate for legislation that can help bring this number down.

I plan to meet with Senator Erin Lynch Prata, and ask her to support legislation, which would encourage healthy lifestyles for children in schools.

Up to one-third of cancer cases and cancer deaths in the United States are due to poor nutrition, lack of physical activity, overweight and obesity – by supporting this legislation, lawmakers have the opportunity to highlight the benefits of healthy foods through advertising and limit students’ exposure to unhealthy foods within the schools.

Our volunteers will be joined by Governor Raimondo who will be kicking off the program by discussing her healthy initiatives for Rhode Island, and Lieutenant Governor McKee will be leading a lap around the State House Rotunda to honor survivors and caregivers.

We will let our lawmakers know that Rhode Islanders are counting on them to take a stand by supporting what works to prevent cancer. It’s time to finish the fight against this devastating disease.
