Thanks for fighting for open space

To the Editor:

I’m writing to applaud Congressman Jim Langevin for standing up for conservation funding that protects public lands around the country, including beaches and coastal areas in Rhode Island.

The Land and Water Conservation Fund is a federal program set up decades ago by Congress to protect, improve and expand public lands. The LWCF has a track record of success in Rhode Island, providing places like the Block Island National Wildlife Refuge and beaches all along our coast with critical funding by using a fraction of the royalties from offshore oil drilling to fund conservation programs. Unfortunately, Congress annually raids the LWCF for non-conservation purposes, leaving a legacy of backlogged conservation and recreation needs.

Thankfully, Congressman Langevin has been a supporter of the LWCF, and just recently signed a bipartisan letter to House appropriators urging full and permanent funding for the program in the next fiscal year. Congressman David Cicilline also signed this letter, and on the Senate side, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse has co-sponsored a bill to ensure full and permanent funding for the program.

In Rhode Island, we’re lucky to have a Congressional delegation fighting to make sure that Rhode Island’s beaches and parks can stay open and in good condition now and in the future.
