Librarian Wil Gregersen will speak briefly prior to the showing of five counter cultural films that he says “saved Hollywood.” The films will be shown at the Warwick Public Library on Wednesdays, October 29 and November 5, 12 and 19 at 7 p.m.

In the 1960s, Hollywood was in trouble. Americans, especially young people, weren’t going to the movies anymore. Until the men who created The Monkees for TV began to make feature films that brought crowds back to the theaters.

On October 29, watch Easy Rider (1969), starring Peter Fonda and Dennis Hopper. After a big drug sale, Wyatt, aka Captain America, and Billy retire from dealing to travel the U.S.A. on motorcycles.

On November 5, enjoy Five Easy Pieces (1970), starring Jack Nicholson and Karen Black. Bobby Dupea, a resentful pianist working on an oil rig, travels home to visit his dying father and cultured siblings.

On November 12, take in The Last Picture Show (1971), starring Timothy Bottoms and Jeff Bridges. High school seniors Sonny Crawford and Duane Jackson stumble into the pitfalls of adulthood in their collapsing 1950s Texas town.

On November 19, see The King of Marvin Gardens (1972), starring Jack Nicholson and Bruce Dern. David Staebler, a late-night radio talk show host, is pulled into his older brother Jason’s latest get-rich scheme.

Register online at warwicklibrary.org or call 739-5440 x4. For more information, call 739-5440, x221. The library is located at 600 Sandy Lane. This event is free and open to all.

And the fifth one is so special, if you don't know what it is, well then you are not hip and are not invited.
