The lesser of evils

To the Editor,

The Primary Day is upon us and we Rhode Island voters are faced with an age-old dilemma. Are we voting with spirited support for a candidate who reflects our views and who we have faith in? Or are we more likely trying to figure out who will hurt our state the least should they ascend to the governor’s chair?

On the Democrat side, we must choose between a wealthy opportunistic carpetbagger, Clay Pell, with no relevant experience, or a financier, Gina Riamondo, whose tenure as General Treasurer has seen an under performing state investment portfolio with greater fees hoisted upon the taxpayer than her predecessors, or an apologetic mayor, Angel Tavares, who is consistently thirsting for recognition about how far he has come from his humble beginnings, or an insignificant enemy of sea creatures, Todd Giroux.

On the Republican side, in perhaps one of the dirtiest primary campaigns in our state’s history, we must choose from a sitting mayor, Allan Fung, who has experienced a continuum of municipal mistakes in the last year, or a businessperson, Ken Block, who is a factualist yet quixotically aspires to achieve the constitutionally unachievable as our chief executive.

The Hippocratic Oath that every doctor must pledge to practice medicine states: First, do no harm. In deciding who will attempt to lead the Ocean State on Primary Day, maybe that should be the best standard as we determine who is lesser of evils.
