The tomato tree

Using techniques handed down by his father, Paul Bucacci has been planting a vegetable garden for years, but few have been as productive as this year’s. In addition to a 12-foot “tomato tree,” Paul’s garden has produced some giant tomatoes like the three-pound one he is holding. He attributes the success of his green thumb to coffee grinds and chicken manure. In addition he layers the fertilizer so that later in the season when the roots reach the proper depth they have the nutrients to continue producing. The Hoxsie resident, who lives on Moore Street, also has seven-foot high kale plants and an abundance of beans. (Warwick Beacon photo)
