Theater in Park brings curtain down on village summer series
SUMMER STAGE: An audience numbering more than 200 gathered around the park gazebo for the final performance in the summer series.

The summer Jazz in the Park series came to a close last Friday, as the Baker Players performed a variety of skits and songs to an enthusiastic crowd at Pawtuxet Park. The series is one of several free activities hosted by the Friends of Pawtuxet Village. Other favorites include the annual Halloween parade and the Christmas in the village hay rides with Santa. The Pawtuxet Village Association also hosts village events at the park and during the holidays.

“It’s to promote the village as a destination,” Friends president Marta Martinez says. But it is also, she adds, “to bring pride to the community.”

In addition to performances at the park gazebo once a month during the summer, the Friends also sponsored a Thursday night chess club in the park.

Friday’s performance was a first in the park for the Players at Barker Playhouse of Providence – the third annual Theater in the Park event. They had their audience laughing, silent in reflection and throughout applauding.

The Friends underwrite the events with the Taste of Pawtuxet Village that will be held Sept. 30 at the Imperial Room at Rhodes Place. The “taste” features dishes from village restaurants. Tickets are $25. (Text and photos by John Howell)
