Those in service of the patients

To the Editor:

I have worked at Kent hospital for around 27 years. I have seen a lot of changes over those years. I, like many others devoted to our passion, decided Kent was the soil we wanted to plant that passion in. A lot of blood, sweat and tears to put it mildly. My dedication and devotion has not wavered all these years, I do it for the patients, to make someone’s life better at the end of the day. A small contribution to the local community. If not for these small contributions, these so called Chiefs, would not have the lifestyles they are accustomed to.

How do you spell greed?

When was the last time, you held a hand of a frightened child, comforted a confused sun-downing senior citizen, comforted a parent of a dying child, brought hope to a family of an overdose victim, walked into a room of an HIV/AIDS patient when the doctor refused based on ignorance; took the body of a patient to the morgue you just did CPR on; calmed the anxious, frightened and confused; gave a back rub to the ravaged victim of cancer or clarified an order so no harm would occur just to name a few of the menial tasks we perform every day?

So you can call yourself a Chief of CNE.

    Dear Liz,

I am a mortgage broker of 38 years experience and I could not agree with you more!

I have written mortgages for doctors, administrators and nurses and, although they all deserve a decent income, the nurses give the greatest value to the patients BY FAR. In my honest opinion they should be paid more than the doctors or administrators and I have often wondered why they weren't. 90% of the care for patients comes from nurses and it isn't reflected in their compensation. Did you see the movie "Patch Adams"? Nurses are like the role Robin Williams played and doctors and administrators are, well, not as valuable to the patients. Maybe you will start a movement to correct this. I will be routing for you because it's long overdue.

    Stay well.

    Liz,

I could not agree with your assessment more. The chiefs are increasing while the real work horses behind the scenes are losing their jobs left and right. Like you I have been within the CNE organization for 20+ years and have seen how our small community hospitals have been turned into nothing more than number cruncher's. We are no longer able to hold the hand of a sick, confused patient because time is money. It turns my stomach to see what this monopolistic environment is turning us into, we work more, fight harder for rights, and get punished for loyalty and individuality.
