Three Warwick natives helping first-place Rams

Posted

The La Salle girls’ hockey team finished the regular season with a record of 15-1 – four points ahead of second-place Narragansett/North Kingstown/South Kingstown Co-op.

The Rams have had a full team effort this season, but three Warwick natives have had a hand in the team’s success.

Alison Altshuler is a junior that grew up playing for Warwick Junior Hockey. Primarily a defenseman prior to enrolling at La Salle, Altshuler moved up to forward for the good of the team. She is recognized as one of the hardest working players on the team and is a mainstay on the Rams’ penalty kill.

Tess Fielding, a senior, has only been playing hockey for two years, and has shown improvement throughout those two seasons. Two seasons ago, Fielding joined the team because the Rams were in need of a back-up goalie, and Fielding continued to get better each day. After taking last season off, Fielding came back this season and earned a 9-0 shutout against Cranston/East Greenwich Co-op. She then moved to forward a quarter of the way through the season and scored a goal in her first game skating out. Fielding ended the season with three goals and an assist.

Michaela McNamara, another senior, is a two-time team captain. McNamara led the league in scoring this season with 66 points – 38 goals and 28 assists. She plays on both the power play and penalty kill units and was also the team recipient of the Hobey Baker Character Award.

Altshuler, Fielding and McNamara will look to help La Salle regain the state title this season – winning in 2012-13, before Warwick Co-op became the first public school team to win last year.

La Salle will open its playoff run against Burrillville/Ponaganset on Friday.

Several Warwick wrestlers place at freshmen and junior varsity meets

The freshmen and junior varsity state wrestling meets were held two weekends ago and several wrestlers from Warwick schools performed well, with Hendricken going on to win both.

In the freshmen meet, Warwick Vets’ Shawn Holland placed second in the 100-pound weight class, before Hendricken’s Cam Nappi at 106, Devin Rivet at 120 and Dylan DiSano at 126 all won their weight classes. Vets’ Eric Watts won the 113-pound weight class, while Austin Morelli placed first at 195.

In the junior varsity state meet, Nick Berling at 120, Anthony Lanni at 126, Colton Boesch at 195 and Ben Monti at 220 all won their weight classes.

Toll Gate’s Finn Casey was the only Titan to place, earning fourth at 126 at the junior varsity meet.
