Tierney, Hawks claim relay title at Knights of Columbus meet

Bishop Hendricken’s top runners showed the La Salle Rams this Saturday that they do not go down without a fight, and leading the charge was senior Colin Tierney.

Running at the Knights of Columbus Relays, Hendricken took first place in the Division I 4x1 mile relay, with Tierney playing a big role. For the first three quarters of the race, it looked as if Hendricken may fall just short.

That is, until the baton got into the hands of Tierney, the Hawks leading distance runner.

His impressive time of 4:23 was enough to overcome a nine-second gap between himself and LaSalle freshman D.J. Principe, who finished in 4:35.

The race itself turned out to be strictly a two-team race, with the next best finisher after Hendricken and La Salle nearly 30 seconds back.

The Hendricken “A” squad of sophomore Avery Ingegneri, juniors Grant Gauthier and Michael Potter, and Tierney, were able to end up on top, with a final time of 18:22.87, sliding in three seconds ahead of the Rams, who finished in 18:25.96.

The Hawks “B”, “C”, and “D” teams also had impressive performances, finishing fifth, seventh, and 11th with times of 19:29.05, 20:01.62, and 20:51.27, respectively. Another hard-fought finish also came from the Pilgrim squad, which placed fourth in the Division II race with a final time of 22:09.24.
