Tierney sets state record at nationals

Several Hawks soared this weekend at the New Balance Indoor Nationals down in Manhattan, and one even made Rhody history.

Last Friday, eleven Hendricken athletes arrived at The Armory in New York to compete in the national championships, hosted every year by New Balance. Every Hawk did well in their respective events, but the highlight of the day came from senior distance runner Colin Tierney. With his finish of 15:04.15 in the 5,000 meter run, Tierney broke the five-year Rhode Island state record in the 5K. The record was previously held by Nick Ross of East Greenwich, who ran a time of 15:13.13 in 2009.

Tierney’s record-breaking performance this past weekend was preceded by a fifth-place finish in the two-mile run at the New England championships, with a time of 9:15.61, and a second-place finish in the 3000 meter run at the state meet prior to that, finishing in 8:47.09. His finish at Nationals helped him clinch tenth place in the country in the 5K.

Now, as Tierney prepares for outdoors and his final high school track season, he is also looking forward to running for Columbia University, following in the footsteps of former Hawk distance runner Jake Sienko.

Later on in the meet, Tierney helped contribute to an 18:33.07 finish in the 4x1 mile relay, alongside junior Jared Boulanger, sophomore Avery Ingegneri, and junior Grant Gauthier. Their finish granted them the 20th spot in the nation.

In the 4x200 relay, the Hendricken team of Nick Stravato, Lee Moses, Kwity Paye and Ronny Gaynor finished with a time of 1:34.52, a mere 4.8 seconds off the state record. Moses also finished 12th in the country in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 2 inches.

Junior Ben Murphy also clinched a 12th-place spot in the high jump, reaching a height of 6 feet, 2.25 inches. Seniors Chris Celona and Ed Barber cleaned up for the Hawks in the weight throw finishing 15th and 19th, respectively. Celona threw a distance of 62 feet, 3 inches, and Barber earned a distance of 59 feet, 11 inches.
