Bishop Hendricken and Toll Gate High School will be two of more than 200 featured bands at Berklee’s 49th annual High School Jazz Festival at Hynes Convention Center in Boston this weekend. The festival is the country’s largest high school jazz competition. Over 3,000 high school students who comprise over 200 bands and vocal ensembles will compete for $175,000 in scholarships to various Berklee summer programs. The free event, which is open to the public, will feature concerts, a clinic with Berklee Brass Department chair Sean Jones, and performances by Berklee groups.
The students from 13 states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, including the Maggie Scott Trio, with Bruce Gertz and Bob Savine, Berklee Global Jazz Institute Trumpeter Sean Jones, Berklee P Funk Ensemble, Berklee Tower of Power
Ensemble, and The 99th Army Band, will perform. The event is at the Hynes Convention Center, 900 Boylston Street in Boston, on Saturday, Feb. 11, from 8:30-9 p.m. Award presentations will occur from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m.
