The Rhode Island Interscholastic League basketball playoffs began this past weekend and the Toll Gate girls’ and boys’ basketball teams each won their preliminary round games to earn a spot in the quarterfinals.
The boys’ team, who earned the 8-seed, defeated Masters by a score of 38-30 on Sunday night.
The Titans were led by guard Joel Johnson, who drilled a game-high five 3-pointers, en route to a 16-point performance. Austin Ouimette was the only other Titan in double-figures with 12 points. Austin Giard added eight in the win.
The victory has earned the Titans a trip to Moses Brown on Tuesday night, where they will take on the top-seeded Quakers at 7 p.m. in one of four quarterfinals in Division III.
The girls’ team upset Classical, 61-43, behind an explosive performance by Hannah McNulty, who poured-in a game-high 32 points.
Senior Holly Gerber-George was second on the Titans with 13 points, while Marisa Giard added nine.
The win gave Toll Gate’s girls’ basketball program its first playoff win since 2005.
The Titans will look to build off of their upset win on Tuesday, when they travel to Middletown for a quarterfinal game against the top-seeded and undefeated Islanders. The game will tip at 7 p.m.
