Touch-A-Truck event raises funds for D-Strong Foundation

Firefighters, princesses and a world champion biker came together for a charity event in City Park on June 4.

The Touch-A-Truck event, which drew about 1,000 people throughout the day, was organized by Joyce Currier Brown, Jonathan Marr, Kimberly Wineman, Camille Vella Wilkinson, Molly Clare Brown, Sean Rainey and the A Positive Warwick group. Trucks from D’Ambra Construction and the Warwick Fire Department were on display, along with a hot rod Chevrolet and a Humvee from the Cranston Police Department. Appearances by Disney princesses Elsa and Anna from the company Dreams Come True and a bike stunt performance by world champion Chris Poulos also attracted crowds. The Paw Patrol mascots and Chuck E Cheese also visited the children at the event. Food was provided by a Pacos Tacos truck. Raffle tickets were available and sales raised more than $800, which was donated to the Dorian J. Murray Foundation.

The foundation is named for an 8-year-old boy from Westerly whose battle with cancer began the viral #DStrong movement. Dorian’s parents established the foundation to raise awareness of pediatric cancer and help support diagnosed children and their families.

“I want to thank everyone who donated to our raffle for the Touch A Truck,” wrote Currier Brown in a Facebook post. “Thank you also to everyone who came out and supported us by purchasing tickets and helping us to raise money for a great cause. #D-STRONG.”

A Positive Warwick has previously organized family-friendly events like A Night Out At McCoy stadium, and will now add Touch-A-Truck to its list of annual events. The group of organizers, which includes Currier Brown’s four daughters and her husband, is applying for 501C status, so they can “help as many charities as possible each year,” according to Currier Brown.
