University Chorus will offer Music of Praise Dec. 1

The University of Rhode Island’s 80-voice University Chorus, directed by Andrew Howell, will perform “Music of Praise: Celebratory Music from Classical Oratorio to Gospel” for their fall concert, set for Saturday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. The concert will be held in the URI Fine Arts Center Concert Hall, 105 Upper College Road, Kingston. Admission is $10 general public, $5 students, with tickets available at the box office on a first-come basis starting 45 minutes before the concert.

The concert will feature choral works by Beethoven, Faure, Brahms, Hogan, Hopkins, Aguiar, and Hampton. Notable pieces will include URI's Alma Mater, sung by the largest choral ensemble on campus, and Ain't that Good News, arr. Moses Hogan, featuring two soloists from the ensemble, Chris Davey and Brandon Mayeri. The pianist will be Melissa Woolverton.

Andrew Howell, who was recently named the new Music Director for the Chorus of Westerly, has been directing the University Chorus since 2008. A URI alumnus with a bachelor’s degree in music education earned in 2005, he was the first graduate of the University's Master of Music program in Choral Conducting Performance. He also specialized in Organ Performance studying with George Kent. An active singer, organist, and choir director in the South County area for many years, organist for the Anglican Singers, organist and choir director at St. James Episcopal Church in New London, Conn. and at the Watch Hill Chapel in Westerly in the summer months, he also works as a harpsichord technician for Zuckermann Harpsichords in Stonington, Conn.

The University Chorus is an open ensemble, with members from the community as well as students and faculty as members. Auditions and an open rehearsal when new members are welcome are generally held at the start of each semester.
