With both teams in the midst of strong starts to their seasons, Pilgrim traveled to Vets for a non-league field hockey match-up on Monday afternoon, with the ’Canes coming away with a 3-0 victory.

Vets got one goal in the first half and two in the second half, as Savannah Hersey scored twice and Megan Lemay scored once. Lemay added an assist, along with Allison Stopyra and Taylor Axtmann.

In net, Naomi Franzen made two saves for the ’Canes, while Courtney Cardoza made seven saves for Pilgrim. Cardoza currently leads the state with 81 saves.

The win improved Vets to 2-0-1 overall, as the team is 1-0-1 in Division II. It is one of four unbeaten teams remaining in the division, currently sits atop D-II-South and looks poised to blow away last year’s five-win mark. It owns a 3-2 victory over Cranston East and a 1-1 tie with Chariho.

Pilgrim is also playing well. In a difficult Division I, the Pats are 2-3, alone in fourth place in D-I-South. The Pats defeated Tiverton 3-0 last Thursday and then beat South Kingstown 2-1 on Tuesday. Pilgrim has won only six total D-I games in the past three years, and went winless last season, but is off to its best start since moving up. Cardoza is leading the way, along with freshman Paula Cavanagh, who has five goals.

Pilgrim will host unbeaten Barrington today at 3:45 p.m., while Vets was scheduled to take on Rocky Hill on Wednesday. On Monday, the ’Canes will travel to Toll Gate for a 3:45 game.
