Vets seniors masters of sidewalk art

LADY IN RED: Jaime Yates, Jennifer Salerno, Joelle Nelson and Jenna O’Connell are all smiles showing off their Betty Boop masterpiece.

Last Friday, 115 seniors from Warwick Veterans Memorial High School spent the morning in the sunshine, participating in the school’s annual sidewalk chalk art project. Art teacher Karen Larson organized the event, which has been held for 10 years, to provide a day of relaxing and bonding for the seniors, who presented their senior projects the day before. Students broke into small groups to design chalk art pictures on portions of the sidewalks outside the school. This year, all pictures needed to feature vintage TV shows or cartoon characters. “It is a good way to chill out,” said Larson. In addition, each student paid $5 to participate in the event; all proceeds went to the Corey Kenyon Fund, which honors the memory of a student who passed away. The fund generates a scholarship for a Warwick Vets student each year.
