Vikings too much for ‘Canes

Despite a comeback victory from Corinne Gregoire at No. 1 singles, the Warwick Vets girls’ tennis team fell to Rogers on Tuesday afternoon, 6-1.

Gregoire, who had dropped just one match all season entering Tuesday, fell down a set and a break to Rogers’ top player, Kaitlin McGuire, before winning 10 of the next 11 games. Gregoire would go on to win the second set 6-2, before taking the third set 6-3 for a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory.

“Corinne’s a strong player with a lot of stamina,” Vets coach Jim DeSimone said. “She’s very dedicated to this sport – a lot of these girls are. Corinne is only a junior, so she’ll be well-known for many years to come. Her head is on her shoulders and she’s a strong player.”

The match at No. 2 singles went the distance as well, but this time the result went in Rogers’ favor.

Vets’ Olivia Murray dropped the first set, 3-6, to Rogers’ Dori Cawley, before battling back to take the second set 6-4.

However, Cawley would buckle down in the third set for the 2-1 win, as Murray dropped that final set 4-6.

The only other victory that Vets notched was in No. 4 doubles, however, that match was played as an exhibition because Rogers had already clinched the win at that point.

Nonetheless, a pair of freshmen – Courtney Cardenas and Cassidy Doris – would claim that match 6-4.

But all of the other matches would be won by Rogers, as the Vikings dropped the ‘Canes to 1-6 on the season.

Vets’ Catherine Brennan dropped her match at No. 3 singles, 2-6, 1-6, while Mackenzie Mills encountered the same fate at No. 4 singles, falling 1-6, 3-6.

Unfortunately, the ‘Canes would drop matches at first, second and third doubles, too.

At No. 1 doubles, Rogers’ Emily Tollefson and Paige Montgomery edged Vets’ top doubles team of Stephanie Racca and Julia Hallman 3-6, 3-6.

Fay Callahan and Meg Turner would grab another victory for Rogers at No. 2 doubles with a 1-6, 0-6 win over Katie Kosky and Vanessa Streb for the ‘Canes.

Xinnie Mai and Izabella Tran would go on to drop a 3-8 decision to Rogers’ Aria Winters and Katie Tejada at No. 3 doubles.

Although the ‘Canes didn’t come away with a team victory, Vets head coach Meg Shideler is pleased with how her team is progressing this fall.

“Our team is improving,” Shideler said. “Each girl is playing their best, and each match shows a little bit of improvement. These girls are dedicated and were here working all summer. No matter what, they just keep coming back and try to do better and better.”

Vets was set to host West Warwick, which was also 1-6, on Wednesday, but results were unavailable at press time.

The ‘Canes will travel to Woonsocket today for a 3:30 p.m. match.
