Volleyball team picks up first victory

The CCRI women’s volleyball team hosted the Lady Tigers of Queensborough Community College from Bayside, N.Y., and won a best-of-five match 3-2 to begin the season 1-0.  The Lady Knights defeated the Lady tigers 11-25, 52-16, 25-17, 22-25, and 17-15 to win the best-of-five match 3-2.  With the victory the Lady Knights begin the season 1-0.   

CCRI lost the first game 25-11 but battled back to win game two 25-16. Janny Cabrera (Providence) had seven kills and 3.5 blocks in the second game while freshman setter Alyssa Salinas (Corpus Christi, Texas) finished the set with five assists. Sarah Keomorokot (Providence) in the back row was CCRI’s most consistent passer.

The Lady Knights rolled the momentum into a 25-17 game three victory. Haley Greenwood (Goldsboro, N.C.) moved to the outside hitter position after Keomorokot left with an injury and notched two kills.

Queensborough came back to win game four 25-22, bu t the Lady Knights held strong in game five, winning 17-15 for the match victory. Cabrera finished the last game with five kills while Salinas had five assists.

Soccer defeats

Mercer 3-1

 

The CCRI Women’s Soccer team hosted the Vikings of Mercer County Community College from West Windsor, N.J. at the CCRI Soccer Complex on the Flanagan Campus in Lincoln. The Knights defeated the Vikings 3-1 for their first win of young the season, running their record to 1-4.

Mercer opened the scoring in the 12th minute, but CCRI tied the game 16 minutes later when freshman striker Carla Porras (Narragansett) scored on a pass from Selena Canales (Cranston). The first half ended with the score 1-1.

In the second half, CCRI broke through as Porras tallied her second goal of the game on a pass from Jessica Hammond (Warwick) in the seventh minute. In the 17th minute, Paige Oram (Burrillville, RI) converted for the Lady Knights on a pass from Jennifer Kittila (Warwick) making the score 3-1.  

“Hopefully this win today will break us out of whatever ‘funk’ our team has been in,” head coach Dennis Grassini said. “Everyone has worked hard but we kept coming up short in our previous matches. Our goalkeeper Alex Place and Midfielder Betti Worth continued to shine for us today. Hopefully, this win will put us on the right track moving forward.”

Cross Country runs well in Nassaney Races

 

The CCRI cross country runners traveled to Bryant University to compete in the 13th Annual Nassaney Memorial Races. The Knights did not have a complete team but did put forth some excellent individual efforts.     

Leading the way on the men’s side was David Palkovic (Middletown), who placed 39th in the College Varsity 5k in a time of 17 minutes, 8 seconds. The field was made up of eight NCAA Division I NCAA teams and Palkovic ran very well in one of the most competitive fields he will see this year.

The three other Knights raced in the Memorial Open 5k and also did well. They were led by Daniel Duquette (North Attleboro, Mass.), who placed 13th in a time of 19:36 followed by Britton Laney (Pascoag), who placed 22nd in a time of 20:05. Rounding out the Knights in the open race was Joseph Gareri (Uxbridge, Mass.), who placed 56th in a time of 23:21.
