The Warwick North softball team that made it all the way to the World Series at the 12-year-old level last summer is at it again, this time at the junior league level.
Warwick North, which has eight of the 13 players from that World Series team on its roster, won the state junior league championship on Friday night, cruising to a 10-4 victory over North Smithfield at Pacheco Park.
North’s offense exploded for 10 runs in the early innings to create some separation on the scoreboard, as Alyssa Richard roped a pair of doubles in the win and Dyonna Rodas registered three hits.
“The difference was our baserunning,” Warwick North coach Carlos Rodas said. “North Smithfield was more of a station-to-station team, so it took them three or four hits to score a run. Our aggressiveness on the bases really shocked them.”
Sierra Ricci started in the circle for Warwick North and tossed four shutout innings, before running into some trouble in the fifth due to defensive miscues.
North then brought in Emily Carter to close things out, and she did just that, limiting the damage in the fifth and slamming the door in the sixth to secure the 10-4 win.
The team will now move on to the East Regional, where it’ll play Vermont on Friday to open play in West Haven, Connecticut.
“We’re definitely looking to make a run at it again,” Rodas said.
