CYBER CRIME

On Aug. 11 at 3:49 p.m., Officer Alfred Silveira was dispatched to an address on Preston Drive for the report of a cyber crime.

Upon arrival, Silveira met with the victim, who said around 2:30 that afternoon, he received a message on his desktop computer that he would have to pay $400 to gain access to his computer. He said his computer was being controlled remotely and he did not have any control over his computer. He said he immediately cancelled all of his credit cards.

He told Silveira there were no fraudulent charges on his credit cards at this time and that he was working with Verizon to mitigate the network security issue.

Silveira said the origin was unknown of where and how the computer was being controlled. Verizon advised the victim to disconnect the computer and they would respond to his residence to look into it.

The man said he did not have any personal information on his computer, such as his social security number. He was advised to contact his banks and the credit bureau so they are aware.

SHOPLIFTING

On Aug. 12 at 3 p.m., Officer Stephen Major was dispatched to Macy’s at Warwick Mall, 400 Bald Hill Road, in reference to a shoplifter in custody.

Upon arrival, Major met with a Macy’s loss prevention officer, who said she observed a female, later identified as Paulette M. Ciano-Fiore, 55, of 18 Oaklawn Manor Drive, Cranston, select what ended up being 12 items (valued at $652.92). Ciano-Fiore concealed the items and passed all points of purchase, making no attempt to pay for the merchandise. Video footage of the incident was later entered into evidence.

Loss prevention stopped Ciano-Fiore outside of Macy’s, identified themselves as store security, escorted her back into the store and called Warwick Police.

Major placed Ciano-Fiore in handcuffs and transported her to Warwick Police headquarters, where she was jailed and processed without incident for one count of felony shoplifting and held to appear before the bail commissioner.

VAN THEFT

On Aug. 13 at 5:06 p.m., Officer Nicholas DiNardo responded to the parking lot of the Longhorn Steakhouse at 400 Bald Hill Road for the report of a stolen vehicle.

Upon arrival, DiNardo met with the victim, who said he parked his 2013 white Ford Econoline van bearing Massachusetts commercial registration in the rear of the Longhorn Steakhouse around 4:40 p.m. He said upon exiting the restaurant to grab tools from his van, he spotted a heavyset Hispanic male inside of the vehicle, attempting to exit the lot. The man said he stood in front of the van, however, realizing the subject was not stopping, he moved out of the way and the van fled the scene.

The man said the van, which did have GPS on it, belonged to Medford Wellington Service Co. Inc., out of Billerica, Mass. The man contacted his company dispatch, who said they had the van located by GPS at 9 Thackeray Street in Providence, on the corner of Munroe Street. Providence Police responded to this location and recovered the van, which was towed to Warwick Police headquarters. The man said he and Medford Wellington wish to press charges. DiNardo said the van will be processed by BCI and is currently being held at Warwick Police headquarters.

DiNardo said Longhorn Steakhouse checked negative for surveillance. He also checked with Warwick Mall security, and the surveillance cameras were unable to obtain any relevant footage. In Providence, there is surveillance footage adjacent to the scene where the van was recovered, according to Sergeant John Choquette. Choquette arrived on scene and was advised of the incident.

DiNardo said, at this time, officers have not checked the van. It is unknown whether any items were stolen from within the vehicle while parked in Providence. The man said the van contained approximately $5,000 to $10,000 worth of tools, to include a pump recovery and refrigerant, along with a tablet (valued at $1,000).

WARRANT

On Aug. 12 at 5:17 p.m., Officer Ali Jaafar and Officer Lo were traveling northbound on Post Road when Jaafar observed a vehicle traveling southbound coming off of Elmwood Avenue onto Post Road without a front registration plate.

At this time, Jaafar turned the cruiser around and initiated a traffic stop at Alabama Avenue and Post Rd. Upon speaking with the operator, he told officers he had just purchased the vehicle; however, it had been approximately one month and he still had not registered it, due to mechanical issues he had to address prior to registering the vehicle.

Upon querying the operator and the passenger, it was learned the passenger, who was identified as Devon McDonald, 31, of 327 Admiral Street, Providence, had an active bench warrant out of Sixth District Court for Failure to Pay regarding a previous Possession of Schedule I Substances charge.

Officer Tavares then arrived on scene and Devon McDonald was placed under arrest. He was then transported to Warwick Police Department headquarters, where he was booked, processed, and later transported to the Adult Correctional Institution. The warrant was removed.
