A Warwick woman has been identified as one of those killed in a pair of fatal crashes that occurred within a four-hour period on Route 146 earlier this week.

Marie Simone, 89, was driving the wrong way in the southbound lanes of the highway near Route 116 in Lincoln at approximately 5:23 p.m. Wednesday when her vehicle collided with another head-on, according to Rhode Island State Police.

Multiple 911 calls had reported the wrong-way driver ahead of the crash, police said. It was a few moments later that more calls came in reporting the collision.

The operator of the second vehicle was identified as Joseph Brophy, 30, of Burrillville. His injuries were not life threatening, police said, and he was listed as being in stable condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

Troopers from the Lincoln Woods Barracks, the Collision Reconstruction Unit and the Criminal Identification Unit are investigating the crash.

The other fatal crash on Route 146 occurred earlier Wednesday, at approximately 1:22 p.m., in the southbound lanes in North Providence.

The investigation found that a tractor-trailer had struck a pedestrian in the area of Mineral Spring Avenue. David W. Salois, 28, of Harisville, was identified as the victim. He was found semi-conscious at the scene near an unoccupied Dodge minivan, police said, and was pronounced deceased at Rhode Island Hospital after being transported.

According to police, several witnesses indicated the operator of the minivan “exited his vehicle after stopping in the breakdown lane and entered the first travel lane of travel, directly in the path of the oncoming tractor-trailer.”

The operator of the tractor-trailer was identified as Michael R. Hammond, 45, of Warwick. He was not injured. Police said it has been determined that neither speed nor impairment were a factor in the accident.

State police said motorists are reminded they can report dangerous drivers or hazardous roadway conditions by dialing 911 or *77 on a cell phone.
